# Broadcast overview

> Send one email to a list of contacts. Understand how contacts, segments, topics, templates, and broadcasts fit together, and when to use Broadcast instead of transactional sending.

Broadcast sends one email to many contacts that you store in Nuntly. You keep a contact list, choose who receives each send with segments and topics, write the content once in a template, and start the send. Nuntly adds an unsubscribe link to every message, skips recipients who opted out, and paces the delivery.

<Note>
  Broadcast is available to organizations that have been enabled for it, and it is managed through the API. The dashboard has no Broadcast section. See [Set up Broadcast](/docs/guides/broadcast-setup) for access and prerequisites.
</Note>

## Broadcast or transactional sending

Use transactional sending when your application triggers a message for a specific person, such as a password reset or an order confirmation. Use Broadcast when you send the same message to a list, such as a product announcement or a newsletter.

| Aspect | Transactional sending | Broadcast |
| - | - | - |
| Recipients | Named in each request. See [Send your first email](/docs/guides/send-your-first-email) and [Bulk email sending](/docs/guides/bulk-email-sending). | Contacts stored in Nuntly, optionally narrowed by a segment and a topic. |
| Content | Sent in each request. | Stored in a template version. |
| Unsubscribe | Nuntly adds no unsubscribe link and applies no opt-outs. | Every message carries an unsubscribe link and the one-click unsubscribe headers. |
| Sending identity | The transactional identity of your domain. | A separate identity on the same domain, so a bounce or complaint problem on a broadcast does not stop your transactional emails. |
| Delivery | Starts when the request is processed. | Paced in pages of contacts, immediately or at a scheduled time. |

Both types respect the [suppression list](/docs/guides/broadcast-unsubscribe#suppression-list). Only Broadcast respects unsubscribes.

## How the pieces fit together

<Steps>
  <Step title="Add contacts">
    A contact is an email address in your organization. You can store custom [contact properties](/docs/guides/broadcast-segments#contact-properties) on it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Group contacts">
    Put contacts in [segments](/docs/guides/broadcast-segments#segments) to target a subset of your list. Use [topics](/docs/guides/broadcast-segments#topics) to let contacts opt out of one kind of message without leaving your list.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Write a template">
    A [template](/docs/guides/broadcast-templates) holds versions of your content. You publish a version to make it the active one.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create and send a broadcast">
    A [broadcast](/docs/guides/broadcast-sending) ties a sender address, a template, and an optional segment and topic together. You send it immediately or schedule it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Follow delivery">
    The broadcast moves through a [status lifecycle](/docs/guides/broadcast-sending#status-lifecycle). Each recipient has a send record, and the email events for a recipient carry the broadcast id.
  </Step>
</Steps>
