Most guides say a dedicated IP needs 50,000 emails a month. Here's what happens to deliverability when you get one before your volume can warm it up.

Search "dedicated IP for low volume transactional email" and every result gives you the same number: wait until you're sending around 50,000 emails a month. Brevo says it, HubSpot says it, most ESP help centers say some version of it. The number gets repeated so often it starts to sound like a law of physics.

What almost none of them explain is what happens if you buy a dedicated IP before you have the volume to back it up. A dedicated IP with no sending history has no reputation, and no reputation means no deliverability guarantee. Getting one too early can hurt your inbox placement while it warms up.

What a dedicated IP actually changes for deliverability

Dedicated IP: a sending IP address used exclusively by one sender, so its reputation reflects only that sender's own traffic.

On a shared IP, you inherit whatever reputation the pool has already built. That cuts both ways. Google is direct about it: "The activity of any senders using a shared IP address affects the reputation of all senders for that shared IP address," according to Google's guidelines for bulk senders.

If the pool is well managed, you benefit from months or years of accumulated trust on day one. If another tenant on that pool sends garbage, your mail can get caught in the fallout.

On a dedicated IP, you lose both sides of that trade. Mailbox providers judge you on your own sending pattern alone: your volume, your complaint rate, your bounce rate, your consistency over time. Other senders' mistakes cannot touch your reputation, but their accumulated trust cannot help you either.

A dedicated IP gives you control over your own reputation. It does not give you a better reputation by default, and that difference decides whether getting one now helps or hurts.

Why an unwarmed IP is a risk, not an advantage

Reputation is built from history: sustained volume, engagement, complaint rates, and bounce rates observed over weeks. A brand-new dedicated IP has none of that. Mailbox providers have nothing to evaluate you against, so they default to caution rather than trust.

Google's own tooling reflects this directly. Low volume compounds the problem instead of softening it. When your sample size is small, each event carries more weight. A single bounce spike from one stale list, on a fresh IP with no offsetting history, can look like a pattern rather than an anomaly.

The volume threshold that justifies the switch

The "50,000 emails a month" figure that shows up everywhere is a reasonable floor, not a precise trigger. It marks the point where a sender typically has enough daily volume to generate a continuous signal, not a guarantee that the switch will pay off immediately.

The common thread across these bands is consistency, not the raw monthly total. A sender pushing 60,000 emails a month in one weekly burst is a worse candidate than one sending 40,000 spread evenly across the month, because mailbox providers read steady, predictable traffic as a stronger signal than the same volume delivered in spikes.

The shared IP already carries months of accumulated sending history, spread across many senders whose combined volume gives mailbox providers a strong, continuous signal to evaluate against. Your individual messages benefit from that trust from the first send.

A freshly provisioned dedicated IP starts at zero. It needs weeks of careful, gradual ramp-up to reach a comparable level of trust, and during that window, it has none of the safety margin a shared pool provides. One bad batch, one bounce spike from an unclean list, one aggressive send during a launch, and there's no accumulated goodwill to absorb it.

For most senders under the volume threshold, a well-reputed shared IP carries the better risk profile until volume can support what a dedicated IP requires.   1. Pull your last 60-90 days of send volume. Most dashboards or your provider's API will give you this by day, not just by month.
